God’s Love vs. Human Love: Why We Get It Wrong

Everyone talks about love. We hear it in songs, see it in movies, and chase after it in our relationships. But have you ever stopped to ask: Is the love I give and receive the same love God intended?

Here’s the reality—we often confuse human love with God’s love. And when we do, we set ourselves up for disappointment, unmet expectations, and broken hearts.

The Problem: Human Love is Flawed

Human love, at its best, is still imperfect. Why? Because we are imperfect people. Our love often comes with:

  • Conditions“I’ll love you as long as you love me back.”
  • Limits“I can’t love you if you hurt me too much.”
  • Self-interest“I love you for what you bring to my life.”

Even in our closest relationships, love can be transactional—based on emotions, attraction, or personal benefit. But God’s love is entirely different.

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord.”Isaiah 55:8

God’s Love: The Ultimate Difference

When we compare God’s love to human love, the contrast is undeniable:

  • Unconditional vs. ConditionalGod loves us, not because of what we do, but because of who He is. (Romans 5:8)
  • Everlasting vs. TemporaryHuman love can fade, but God’s love never runs out. (Jeremiah 31:3)
  • Selfless vs. Self-seekingGod’s love is sacrificial, always seeking our highest good—even when it costs Him everything. (John 3:16)

“The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end.”Lamentations 3:22

Why This Matters in Our Relationships

When we expect human love to fill us the way only God’s love can, we set ourselves up for disappointment. But when we let God’s love define and shape us, we learn to love others differently:

  • We love without expecting something in return. (Luke 6:35)
  • We forgive, even when it’s undeserved. (Colossians 3:13)
  • We seek the good of others, not just ourselves. (Philippians 2:3-4)

So, How Do We Stop Getting Love Wrong?

The key isn’t to look for perfect love from people—it’s to receive perfect love from God first.

  • Spend time with God’s love daily through scripture (Romans 8:38-39).
  • Ask Him to help you love like He does—without conditions.
  • Let go of the idea that love is only about emotions. True love is action.

“We love because he first loved us.”1 John 4:19

Final Thought

If you’ve ever felt like love has let you down, maybe you’ve been looking for the wrong kind. God’s love isn’t like human love—it’s better.

Reflection Question:

Where have you been expecting human love to fill a space that only God’s love can?

Let’s talk about it in the comments!
